About the creator
Kristie Ferree Dunmore's idea for Sur-Lock was born out of a personal necessity, as some of the best ideas are, after being diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome at 50 years of age. After a lifetime of chronic pain and unexplained ailments Kristie was finally diagnosed last year. With this diagnoses came a new reality which included multiple orthotic braces needed to aid in the stability of most of her major joints. This included full bi-lateral leg braces. Not long after, she realized that the fasteners were not working efficiently. Throughout the day the fasteners on the braces would come un-done, which could not only be embarrassing and hard to manage, but also created a loss in stability which could lead to further injury. After inventing and hand-stitching a new orthotic brace fastener design for her own needs, Kristie realized the unbelievable effectiveness of her product, and wanted to help others who would surely be having the same issues as she had. So Kristie teamed up with her daughter, who also has EDS, and they began a new journey together, to make Sur-LOCK available to all those in need!
Family business
Kristie was able to bring Sur-LOCK to life with the help of her husband and three children. Kristie's husband contributes years of computer knowledge and most importantly is an incredible support system. Her daughter has a background in graphic design and marketing. Her two sons are pursuing careers in business and management and offer their expertise on that front. Kristie's three children are all in the process of being diagnosed with EDS. While Sur-LOCK is beneficial to anyone who uses an orthotic brace, EDS in particular hits home for our family.
EDS awareness
We are committed as a family to bring awareness to Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. EDS is still widely misunderstood, even by health care professionals, and there is still a lot of research to be done.
